Dr. Uli Terheggen is Consultant Paediatric Intensivist at Al Jalila Children's and previously worked as a paediatric and neonatal intensive care consultant in two of the largest Swiss Level III units. He was also a flight physician for two private companies conducting world wide critical care retrievals for adults and children. He is very enthusiastic about medical education and simulation training, and is a Harvard-trained Simulation Instructor.
Dr. Uli is a paediatrician with training in paediatric and neonatal intensive care medicine. He studied Medicine in one of the oldest German medical faculties - the University of Freiburg, where he graduated and also completed his first Doctoral research dissertation in the field of neurosciences at the age of 27. He then moved on to complete a Master's in Public Health and Tropical Medicine at James Cook University in Australia. After his return to Europe, he had medical speciality training in paediatrics and intensive care in Switzerland at the Children's University Hospital, Zürich.
Consecutively he acquired a two-year research scholarship from the Swiss National Science Foundation, which brought him to live five years in Australia where he performed more research work at the Burnet Institute for Biomedical Research and completed a higher research degree from the University of Melbourne. He then joined the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne and worked two years in PICU and a year for PIPER, a dedicated professional paediatric and neonatal transport service which operates metropolitan and state wide and performs over 1200 neonatal and over 400 paeditric retrieval missions per year with ambulance, helicopter, and fixed wing. After returning to Switzerland he worked in the above mentioned Level III units and also completed his board specialization as a Neonatologist. In 2018, he was appointed Deputy Chair of the European Society of Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive care for the section transport, for which he co-leads ambitions in research and collaboration for internationals standards in paediatric and neonatal critical care transports.
