Biography

Dr (Omer) Minhas is a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist with over 15 years experience of working in psychiatry. He has worked as a substantive child psychiatry consultant for 2 years, followed by multiple roles in various teams and settings, gaining a broad-based rich experience. He has led the children learning disability psychiatry team for three health boards in Wales. Previously, he led a substance misuse service for young people in two areas. Prior to this, he worked as an inpatient child psychiatrist unit in South Wales. His experience of working in different teams and locations has polished his skills and clinical acumen in the form of engagement work, system-based approach to young person and families, multiagency working, and use of wider scientific explanation/approaches in mental disorders in young people along with the balanced use of psychopharmacology. Dr Omer has strived to deliver young person-centered and family-friendly service for range of conditions such as ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, Eating problems, etc. With the experience of young people with intellectual disability, this involves assessment of challenging behavior in addition to any co-morbid mental disorders. For young people with substance misuse, this involves identifying and treating any co-morbid conditions. Dr Omer has been active in teaching and training and currently supports Cardiff University MSc psychiatry programme as honorary lecturer in addition to being the clinical teacher for University of South Wales, Diploma and MSc programme. Dr Omer is the founder and Chair of Cardiff CASC Training, an organisation for the delivery of MRCPsych CASC exam training in Wales ). In his spare time, he plays table tennis, badminton, and enjoys bike rides
