In a recent Lancet Commission on the future of care and clinical research in autism, we set out to describe what can be done in the next 5 years to address the current needs of autistic people and their families all around the globe. We emphasized that children and adults with autism can lead happy and healthy lives, but that urgent action is required to make sure this happens. In this presentation, I will outline key findings from the Lancet Commission, and then discuss some of the main challenges to ensure that the future of care and clinical research in autism does indeed meet the needs of the culturally-, socio-economically- and linguistically diverse communities we serve.
