The Critical Care Centre promotes the health and safety of children who are critically ill or injured or who suffer acute or chronic pain, requiring continuous, comprehensive, and detailed intensive care because of the critical nature of the their disease or illness.
Care of the critically-ill patient is provided by the specialist paediatric physicians and critical care staff, highly skilled in caring for children under serious or life-threatening circumstances.
Our team offers a broad range of treatment, ranging from nutrition therapies in our paediatric intensive care units to caring for children with chronic respiratory conditions. We have the capacity to treat more than 2,000 patients annually.
The overall goal of the Centre is to:The NICU is a 22-bed level IV unit that provides care to Neonates and infants < 60 days old that are referred from all hospitals in the United Arab Emirates and Gulf countries.
Medical and surgical conditions that are admitted to the NICU includePatients admitted to NICU may be transferred to the PICU at 6 months post-conceptual age.
Commonly performed procedures, services and functions include: Intubation, extubation, chest tube insertion, thoracentesis, bronchoscopy, paracentesis, insertion of UAC, UVC, PICC line, surgical central line, intravenous access, exchange transfusion, ventricular tapping, external ventricular drainage, lumbar puncture, peritoneal tapping, peritoneal drainage, peritoneal dialysis, rectal dilatation, Suprapubic urine aspiration. Total parenteral nutrition, surfactant therapy. PO gavage feeding, promotion of breast feeding/lactation assistance. Respiratory support including nasal CPAP, high flow nasal cannula, non-invasive ventilation (NIV NAVA and conventional), invasive ventilation (conventional, neutrally adjusted and high frequency). Nitric oxide therapy, sub-ambient oxygen therapy. Cardiopulmonary monitoring, ET CO2, amplitude integrated EEG, infrared spectroscopy. Physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

Other surgical interventions may be performed in NICU when the patient is unstable to be transferred to the OT these include, but are not limited to TEF, CDH, CCAM, CLE, Neurenteric cysts, and Tracheostomy.
Our PICU is designed and equipped with the latest medical technology and utilises numerous high level diagnostic and therapeutic modalities to facilitate critical and intensive care management for our children and adolescent patient populations.
The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is an intensive care unit for patients beyond the neonatal age (29 days old full term or corrected age beyond 40 weeks of the ex-preterm babies provided their weight is more than 3 kg) through adolescence.
